Tracy revisited: historical perspective, synoptics, track, and winds

چکیده
When tropical cyclone Tracy (hereafter ‘Tracy’) crossed Darwin on Christmas Day 1974 it became one of Australia’s worst disasters, one that has become part of national folklore. The impact on Darwin changed people’s lives, sent some down lifetime career paths, and resulted in major changes in global insurance industry practices and coastal building codes. Yet Tracy was not a unique event for Darwin, there having been a number of previous occasions in which our major northern community had suffered severely from a cyclone’s passage. Herein we discuss the historical context for Tracy compared to other major events both at Darwin and globally (Section 2). The cyclone was unique in the set of events that all had to happen for it to have such an impact (Section 3): the cyclogenesis region well to the north of Darwin has not seen such an event in 60 years and Tracy was small and moving slowly along an erratic track that just happened to bring it over Darwin along close to the worst possible path. These circumstances are described, along with a general overview of the warnings that were provided and some of the difficulties involved (Section 4). We further make the point that Tracy, as with many other similar disasters, was largely a result of inadequate preparation and response. The Origin and Development of the Johannine Egō Eimi Sayings in Cognitive-Critical Perspective
Th e long-held critical judgment that the I-am sayings of Jesus in the Fourth Gospel have no connection at all with the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth is based primarily on the inference that they are entirely missing from the Synoptics. As a result, John has been expunged from Jesus research, assuming its patent ahistoricity; yet critical analyses have largely overlooked JohannineSynoptic simi...
متن کاملACADEMIC WRITING REVISITED: A PHRASEOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF APPLIED LINGUISTICS HIGH-STAKE GENRES FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF LEXICAL BUNDLES
Lexical bundles are frequent word combinations that commonly appear in different registers. They have been the subject of much research in the area of corpus linguistics during the last decade. While most previous studies of bundles have mainly focused on variations in the use of these word combinations across different registers and a number of disciplines, not much research has been done to e...
متن کاملMass Loss and Evolution of Stars and Star Clusters: a Personal Historical Perspective
The development and progress of the studies of winds and mass loss from hot stars, from about 1965 up to now, is discussed in a personal historical perspective. The present state of knowledge about stellar winds, based on papers presented at this workshop, is described. About ten years ago the mechanisms of the winds were reasonably well understood, the mass loss rates were known, and the predi...
متن کاملE-Discovery Revisited: A Broader Perspective for IR Researchers
It is a very positive development that NIST’s Text REtrieval Conference (TREC) has added a track focusing on the legal (discovery) domain. Its organizers should be acknowledged for their commitment and hard work to establish preliminary tasks and arranging initial assessments. In order to ensure that the track evolves into a realistic and relevant field of study, future tracks will need to accu...
متن کاملModelling the Tracy storm surge – implications for storm structure and intensity estimation
The results of hydrodynamic storm surge modelling are used to inform and construct a detailed quantitative description of the possible changing structure and intensity of severe tropical cyclone Tracy as it proceeded across Beagle Gulf to landfall at the City of Darwin in 1974. The measured storm surge is used as an independent wind calibration proxy to augment the measured eyewall winds and pr...
